QUITO, Ecuador (AP) — A strong earthquake shook southern Ecuador and northern Peru on Saturday, killing at least thirteen people, trapping others under rubble, and sending rescue teams out into streets littered with debris and fallen power lines.The U.S. Geological Survey reported an earthquake with a magnitude of about 6.8 that was centered just off the Pacific Coast, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of Guayaquil, Ecuador’s second-largest city. Twelve of the victims died in Ecuador, while one died in Peru.Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso told reporters the earthquake had “without a doubt … generated alarm in the population.” Meanwhile, Ecuador’s Risk Management Secretary Cristian Torres in a radio interview said 11 of the victims died in the coastal state of El Oro and one in the highlands state of Azuay. (AP) — Marcus Sasser started for top-seeded Houston in the NCAA Tournament on Saturday after being forced to the bench in the previous game by a groin injury.The All-America guard had declared a day earlier that his groin was fine and he was definitely playing in the second-round contest against No. 9 seed Auburn.But it was surely a relief to Houston fans when Sasser was announced as a starter for the Cougars, who struggled to beat 16th-seeded Northern Kentucky 63-52 in their opening game Thursday.Sasser injured his groin in the American Athletic Conference Tournament, forcing him to sit out the league championship game. (CNN) — Two people on board a single-engine plane were injured Friday after a collision with another plane during an aerial demonstration in Mesa, Arizona, officials said.The collision, which happened at Falcon Field Airport before 1 p.m. local time, left the two injured people trapped after returning to the runway in a Yakovlev Yak-52, according to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration.Arriving at the scene, officials found that the stricken plane’s landing gear failed, and “the aircraft broke in half behind the cockpit, the plane went nose down and came to a stop on the runway,” the Mesa Fire and Medical Department said in a news release.The two people were extracted from the plane and evaluated on scene for minor injuries, Mesa officials said, adding there were a total of three airplanes participating in formation at the time of the incident.The other single-engine aircraft involved in the collision, a Ryan Navion, landed safely with one per...

(CNN) — Frozen organic strawberries sold at several stores, including Costco and Aldi, and in a frozen fruit blend at Trader Joe’s are being recalled after they were tied to an outbreak of hepatitis A infections in Washington state.The US Food and Drug Administration is also warning people not to eat, sell or serve certain brands of frozen organic strawberries after five people have been infected with hepatitis A after eating them. Two people have been hospitalized.Investigators with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that in all five of the cases, the sick individuals had eaten frozen strawberries sold by a common supplier. Strawberries used by this supplier were imported from certain farms in Baja California, Mexico, in 2022.The strain of hepatitis A causing the illnesses this year is genetically identical to the strain that caused an outbreak of hepatitis A infections last year.
