FREEPORT, Texas (KTRK) — Thousands of dead fish could be seen washing ashore in Freeport in a video sent to ABC13 on Friday, and officials are now warning the public to avoid the area. This happened on Bryan Beach, near the mouth of the Brazos River.A spokesperson with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department said the fish kill was due to a “low dissolved oxygen event.” They estimate tens of thousands of fish have been impacted. On Saturday, more fish were seen washing up, causing officials to recommend to beachgoers to avoid the area and to not enter the water until the area is cleared.Officials said the species most impacted was Gulf menhaden, adding that these events are common in the summer when temperatures increase. If there isn’t enough oxygen in the water, fish can’t “breathe,” the department explained. Before a kill event occurs, the fish will usually try to get oxygen by gulping at the water’s surface early in the morning.Accordin...New details emerge about the alleged search history of the Utah mom charged with her husband’s murder

(CNN) — A judge denied the pretrial release of Kouri Richins – a Utah widow accused of killing her husband before she authored a children’s book about grief – saying she must remain in custody pending the outcome of her trial due to the “substantial evidence” against her.The judge’s decision to deny bail came as new details about the widow’s alleged search history emerged as part of the case against the 33 year old, who appeared in a Park City, Utah, court on Monday.“What is a lethal dose of fentanyl” was one of many phone searches that investigators say were made by Kouri Richins. Prosecutors allege she killed Eric Richins, her husband of nine years, with a lethal dose of fentanyl. A major traffic jam on the southbound lanes of Interstate 75 was caused by a significant crash that led to lane closures. On Tuesday morning, traffic near Northwest 138th Street appeared to be getting along on the left shoulder of the highway after police closed off the road due to the crash. Live video footage of the scene showed one of the vehicles involved in the collision flipped over on its roof. Another SUV appeared to sustain severe damage to its front. Around 7 a.m., 7SkyForce captured a Miami-Dade Air Rescue helicopter landing near the highway in order to transport someone involved in the incident. It is unclear what their condition is. Delays were reported to be as far back as Miami Gardens Drive on the interstate. Drivers are urged to avoid the area as traffic is predicted to only get worse.Rockies beat sloppy Red Sox 4-3 in 10 after rain delay

BOSTON (AP) — Nick Pivetta walked Randal Grichuk to force in the go-ahead run in the 10th inning, first baseman Triston Casas booted a potential inning-ending grounder and the Colorado Rockies beat the Boston Red Sox 4-3 on Monday night in a matchup of last-place teams. The game was rain delayed for 1 hour, 29 minutes after Colorado scored twice in the top of the 10th, giving the Rockies a similar victory to a day earlier.Owning the NL’s worst record coming into the day, the Rockies have won two straight after a six-game losing streak. On Sunday, Nolan Jones hit a walk-off homer after a 1 hour, 25 minute rain delay.Jones made this one last longer, too, when the right fielder made a splendid running backhanded grab, lunging slightly just in front of Boston’s bullpen to take a two-run homer away from Rafael Devers in the eighth.“I saw it well off the bat. I think I got a good jump on it. I started getting back and I didn’t know how close I was getting to the wall,” Jones said. “O...Police warn of delays as they investigate fatality on I-93 south in Medford

In April, Samuel Basallo opened eyes by hitting an opposite-field home run. It wasn’t because the Orioles’ catching prospect mashed a meatball a long way — although, he’s had a few of those in his young career, too — but instead because he hit a pitch out of the strike zone over the fence. After Basallo hit the high and away pitch for a home run, Delmarva hitting coach Josh Bunselmeyer said another Orioles prospect took notice.“Wow, that’s impressive,” Bunselmeyer recalls Jackson Holliday saying after Basallo’s long ball.Holliday, the No. 1 prospect in the entire minor leagues, isn’t the only one impressed by Basallo this spring. In its most recent prospect ranking update, Baseball America moved Basallo into its top 100 at No. 79 after a solid start to the 2023 campaign, his first in full-season ball. At 18 years old, Basallo is one of the youngest players on the top 100 list.“He’s done some impressive things out...3 takeaways from the Chicago Cubs’ 4-6 West Coast trip, including Seiya Suzuki’s vague injury and Christopher Morel’s power

Usually a position player ending the game on the mound is a bad sign for a team.Instead, San Francisco Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford throwing a scoreless ninth inning Sunday against the Chicago Cubs represented a sour way to cap a 4-6 mark on their three-city 10-game West Coast trip. The Cubs salvaged the trip with the series win in San Francisco, though they wasted a chance to sweep the Giants in a 13-3 blowout loss Sunday at Oracle Park.“When we play good defense and get good pitching we’re in games,” manager David Ross said afterward. “Just not a lot of margin for error. Pretty ugly performance pitching today. Left a lot of guys on base today. But love the way the guys responded after getting swept in Anaheim.“When our starting pitchers are carrying the load we’re doing alright.”Here are three takeaways from the road trip.1. “Winning Ugly” became the mantra of the 1983 White Sox, a team that stormed back from being 8 games under .500 on May 26 to win the American League West by 20 games.Despite a postseason reckoning, that ’83 season was so special to Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf that the Sox wear the sartorially-challenged uniforms from that era during Sunday home games on the South Side.Forty years later, the 29-38 Sox perfected the art of losing ugly while wearing those throwbacks. The bullpen blew their second straight ninth-inning lead Sunday in another stomach-churning loss to the Miami Marlins, leaving manager Pedro Grifol to declare “those guys are human.”Without Liam Hendriks to close either game, Joe Kelly and Kendall Graveman took turns gagging on cue, turning a would-be sweep of the Marlins into a series loss and killing any momentum from an uplifting 5-1 stretch against the Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees. With a day off for recovery, the Sox begin a six-game Wes...10 wounded in Denver mass shooting after Nuggets win and suspect taken into custody, police say

DENVER (AP) — Ten people were wounded in a mass shooting early Tuesday in Denver in an area where basketball fans had been celebrating the Nuggets first NBA title win, police said, and a suspect was taken into custody. The shooting happened about 12:30 a.m. — about 3 1/2 hours after the game — and three of the injured were in critical condition, the Denver Police Department said in a statement. The suspect, a man, was one of the seven people who suffered injuries believed to be non-life-threatening.The shooting happened about a mile from Ball Arena, where the Nuggets defeated the Miami Heat on Monday night.“As far as what led up to this altercation that resulted in the shots being fired, that’s still under investigation at this time,” police spokesperson Doug Schepman said. “It did occur in the area where we had largest gathering of folks celebrating during the night.”The area was taped off and evidence markers were at the scene.A small crowd was in the area at the time o...Russian missile attack on Ukraine kills at least 10 in Zelenskyy’s hometown

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian missiles hit civilian buildings in a central Ukrainian city overnight, killing at least 10 people and wounding more than two dozen in a warehouse and a residential building, regional officials said Tuesday. The devastation in Kryvyi Rih, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s hometown, is the latest bloodshed in Russia’s war in Ukraine, as Ukrainian forces are in the early stages of a counteroffensive using Western-supplied firepower.Images from the scene relayed by Zelenskyy on his Telegram channel showed firefighters battling the blaze as pockets of fire poked through multiple broken windows of a building. Charred and damaged vehicles littered the nearby ground. “More terrorist missiles,” he wrote. “Russian killers continue their war against residential buildings, ordinary cities and people.”The governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region, Serhiy Lysak, wrote on the social media app that the bodies of six people were recovered from the warehouse of an unspecified pr...Latest news
