Fringe review: ‘Apocalypse Later’ shows the perils of a mismatched comedy duo

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:55:47 GMT

AvoidCreating sketch comedy is hard. Creating good sketch comedy is even harder. In “Apocalypse Later,” Jacob Okerlund and John Byram do a little of both. Their concepts are clever, but the writing needs work and the duo’s execution is painfully mismatched. Okerlund consistently and charismatically commits to the bit, and it’s clear he’s having fun up there, which helps buoy the show. As for Byram, poor guy, none of this is true. His discomfort is palpable; scenes are dragged down by his low, noncommittal energy. Also: The show runs 35 minutes, just over half the length of other Fringe shows (for the same ticket price).Presented by Jacob and John Productions at Augsburg Mainstage; 8:30 p.m. Aug. 9, 5:30 p.m. Aug. 13Still unsure of what to see? Has an album ever been more appropriately named? Thethird studio album from the Stooges, rebranded Iggy & the Stooges with the addition of guitarist James Williamson, tops my list of greatest albums of all time. Given that multiple mixes of the LP have been done since the album first dropped in 1973, I want to be clear that I strictly listen to the David Bowie mix after putting an ear on all the alternative mixes. By today’s standards, the mix may seem a bit unorthodox, but I would challenge anyone to cite an album that has more organic energy or character. This proto-punk classic laid some of the groundwork for the late ’70s punk revolution that would hit a few years after its release.Raw Power is characterized by its stripped-down, barb...

You’ll want to check them both out, and they’re in the same place.)The second-floor exhibition on Santa Cruz history is thoughtfully curated and provides an inclusive history of the city, from the days of the Ohlone people to Spanish colonization, the expansion of industry, the hippie movement and local LGBTQ+ activism. Founder Fred Swanton missed New York’s Coney Island so much, he took matters into his own hands and built a Santa Cruz version. In the early 1900s, he built up Santa Cruz tourism by touring the state on a train and distributing pamphlets calling his creation, “California’s most popular playground.”A former...
