MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Milwaukee Bucks entered the playoffs boasting the NBA’s best record and believing they had a great shot at winning their second title in three seasons. They instead are finished before May after suffering one of the most stunning first-round playoff losses in league history. The top-seeded Bucks collapsed down the stretch for a second straight game and fell 128-126 in overtime to Miami on Wednesday, losing 4-1 to the eighth-seeded Heat. When he was asked after the game if this early exit made the season a failure, two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo took issue with the question.“There’s no failure in sports,” Antetokounmpo said. “There’s good days, bad days. Some days you’re able to be successful. Some days you’re not. Some days it’s your turn. Some days it’s not your turn. That’s what sports is about. You don’t always win. Other people are going to win. And this year, somebody else is going to win. Simple as that.”The Bucks are just the sixth No. 1 seed to lose to ...

Supreme Court of Canada to release ruling tied to 2007 mass gang slaying in B.C.

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:14:49 GMT

VANCOUVER — The Supreme Court of Canada is set to rule Friday on an appeal by two men found guilty of first-degree murder in the gang executions of six people in Metro Vancouver more than 15 years ago. Lawyers for Cody Haevischer and Matthew Johnston argued last October before the high court that the men were wrongfully denied an opportunity to give evidence about “egregious” police misconduct and cruel in-custody treatment that tainted their convictions. The case has been further complicated since those arguments because Johnston died of cancer last December. However, his lawyer Brock Martland said he spoke with Johnston the day before he died and he wanted the Supreme Court of Canada to order a hearing “to show the public the extent of police misconduct.”The B.C. Court of Appeal ruled in 2021 that Haevischer and Johnston should be allowed to seek a stay of proceedings for abuse of process and ordered an evidentiary hearing, but it stopped short of overturni...

‘You couldn’t get away from it’: 1953 Coronation was major topic at Canadian schools

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:14:49 GMT

Ahead of Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953, Kenneth Munro’s Grade 2 class studied the history of the monarchy, staged a play about the Royal Family and all 700 students at his northern Ontario school listened live on radio as she took her oath. But with King Charles set to be formally crowned on May 6, school boards across the country contacted by The Canadian Press said they had no special plans or dedicated curriculum to mark the occasion – yet another indication of widening apathy towards the monarchy. Munro, a retired former history professor at the University of Alberta, recalled the crepe paper robe – complete with cotton balls and bunting – that he wore as a seven-year-old when cast as the incoming queen’s husband, Prince Philip, for the performance at his school in Longlac, Ont. “The whole community was really geared toward this event, and certainly at school, so that you couldn’t get away from it,” Munro, 77, said. “We were really steeped i...

Russia warns again that risks of nuclear confrontation with US are growing

Risks of a direct military confrontation between the two nuclear powers, Russia and the United States, are steadily growing, the TASS news agency quoted a senior Russian diplomat as saying on Tuesday (25 April).Vladimir Yermakov, the foreign ministry's head of nuclear non-proliferation, told the Russian state news agency that Washington is escalating the risks through its conduct with Moscow.Since the start of its invasion on Ukraine 14 months ago, Moscow has issued regular charges against the US and what it calls "the collective West" for raising the risks of a nuclear war, rhetoric intended to deter Kyiv's allies."If the United States continues to follow its current course of confrontation with Russia, with the stakes constantly escalating on the verge of sliding into direct armed conflict, then the fate of START (nuclear arms treaty) may be a foregone conclusion," Yermakov said. The US told Russia in March that it will cease exchanging some data on its nuclear forces following Mos...

Miss Manners: I don’t want to hurt the bride, but I have qualms about the wedding

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:14:49 GMT

DEAR MISS MANNERS: I have a nephew who is getting married this coming June. His fiancee is a gem of a girl, but my nephew and I have almost no relationship.I am wondering if I should attend the wedding. He and his dad (my brother) are ardent right-wingers, while I describe myself as a “rabid liberal.” I know I will be ignored by the immediate family, and I’m not close to the extended family, either. My feeling is that I should just keep to myself and send them a nice gift. But at the same time, I don’t want to hurt my nephew’s bride. What say you?GENTLE READER: Unpleasant family duties are not a new invention, although Miss Manners recognizes that the level of unpleasantness is on the rise. You should not attend if you know that your presence will, through no fault of your own, cause a scene that will mar the event. Merely that you will be bored is a less convincing excuse. If you do not attend, nothing bars you from writing a charming letter to the bride,...
